Christopher David LaFond, 56, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, at his home in Walker, Minn., surrounded by family.
Friends, family and others whose lives were touched by Chris are invited to a viewing at the Northern Peace Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. March 1 with prayer at 6:30. A funeral will be held at St. Agnes Church of Walker March 2 at 11 a.m. with burial immediately following at Evergreen Cemetery in Walker.
Chris was born Jan. 6, 1961, to Robert and Dorothy LaFond in Minneapolis. He graduated in 1979 from Mounds View High School, and in 1980, he moved north to the Leech Lake area with the Forest Service’s Timber Stand Improvement crew where he met his wife Barb. They settled in Akeley where he was part of the Eastern Hubbard County Fire and Protection District, worked as an instructor at Central Lakes College and ran heavy equipment for his father-in-law, Steve Kaylor, helping to build many of the harbors on Leech Lake and the surrounding area. He later moved to Walker and became the Shingobee Township road superintendent.
Chris was a devoted father and cherished each of his grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman, spending many hours hunting, fishing, boating, or just taking a drive in the woods. Each year he looked forward to Deer Camp where he shared many laughs with the “Lower Howard Lake Sportsman’s Association.” At Deer Camp, he lost in many hands of poker, earning him the nickname “Scoop.”
He is survived by his wife Barb of 35 years; their children, Lynda LaFond, Elizabeth (Matt) Johnson, Rachel (Neville) Eclov, and Chris (Emily) LaFond; their seven grandchildren, Nicholas, Ellayna, Kendra, Travis, Delaney, Katelyn and Isobel; his parents; three brothers; two sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and his dog, Copper.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Gary LaFond and nephew, Greg LaFond.
A memorial fund has been created in Chris’ name to benefit the Northstar Sportsmen’s Club. Memorials and condolences may be sent to 7557 County Road 12 NW, Akeley, MN 56433.
